Advanced and sophisticated imaging technology comes to our practice!

Our practice has just purchased an advanced corneal tomographer called the Oculus Pentacam. This advanced device allows us to visualize and quantify both the anterior and posterior surfaces of the cornea. We are one of only two private practices in San Francisco with this type of device.

A traditional corneal topographer is a machine that many optometric and ophthalmology practices own and gives you basic information about the curvatures of the cornea. A topographer is able to quantify the amount of astigmatism that is in the eye using concentric Placido discs. Astigmatism refers to the oval-like or football-like shape of the front refractive surface of the eye. Astigmatism can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, LASIK, or Toric intraocular lenses during cataract surgery. There are also certain eye diseases that can lead to abnormal astigmatism, causing distorted vision and difficulty seeing and tolerating the usual glasses or contact lenses (e.g., Keratoconus). A topographer is only able to map out the front surface of the cornea.

A corneal tomographer (like the Oculus Pentacam or the Galilei G4) is much more advanced and allows us to visualize using Schiempflug imaging technology both the front AND back of the corneal surfaces. Knowing the back surface of the cornea and its shape allows to gain even more insight into total astigmatism and the overall power of the cornea, which can affect refractive outcomes and vision with contact lens fittings, and after LASIK, PRK, or cataract surgery. The difference can mean good vision versus outstanding vision! It allows us to also take a picture of the angle of the eye and measure corneal thickness at the same time, which is important in diagnosing glaucoma and even conditions where there is an abnormality in the ciliary body or iris. The scan itself only takes 2 seconds and is painless and quick.

We at Eyecare Associates of San Francisco are excited to offer this technology now for all of our patients who come to our downtown Union Square office!

Welcome to Our Newsfeed!

Introducing the Eyecare Associates of San Francisco Newsfeed!

Here you will find the latest information on our San Francisco offices, as well as updates on the latest in ophthalmology and optometry news.

One of the most frequently asked question is about the cost of LASIK.  Laser vision correction is a great way to decrease dependency on glasses and contacts. Although insurance does not cover LASIK or PRK, the savings over many years of buying glasses or contacts can be substantial.  We like to be completely transparent about our fees at our practice, so here is how much the procedure will cost you. Bear in mind that these costs include the pre-operative evaluation, procedure, and all post-operative visits up to 1 year.  Dr. Tan is often able to also provide the post-operative eye drops for you, free of charge.

All-laser custom Wavefront LASIK:  $5,500 for both eyes
Conventional LASIK:  $4,500 for both eyes
Wavefront PRK:  $4,500 for both eyes
Glasses/contacts:  Estimated $500/year, or $10,000 over 20 years

LASIK or PRK is recommended only after a thorough evaluation, and not all patients qualify. If you have questions about LASIK, we recommend that you come in for a consultation with Dr. Kevin Tan or with one of our highly knowledgeable optometrists, Dr. Reshma Shah and Dr. Anh Tran. They are happy to answer any of your questions about the procedure and will help determine whether you are a good candidate. Below is an excerpt from a recent Yelp review by Mark O. of San Francisco, who highlighted his experience with Dr. Tan.

“All in all the operation was over in probably less than 10 minutes and after resting for a few hours I could notice my vision was already better than without glasses, and it seemed to progressively get better through the night.  I e-mailed Dr. Tan that night with some questions about eye maintenance and making sure I understood the recovery protocol.  He responded within minutes!  After my checkup the very next day I discovered I now have 20/15 vision, better than with glasses!
Dr. Tan was great the entire process from beginning to end.  I'm really glad I chose him as my doctor for LASIK.  He also works out of two offices, one near Stonestown Mall and the other near the financial district, both were convenient to me at different times.

Good luck with your decision to do LASIK or not and which doctor to choose, but I didn't go wrong.”
